What are the Top 10 Most Famous Building Structures?

Construction is always evolving, which means that buildings are being constructed and look like no other buildings in the past.  While there are more and more of these spectacular buildings popping up, there are ten famous building structures that stand out from all the rest.
Here are the top 10 famous building structures:

1. The Petronas Twin Towers

These two massive towers can be found in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and from the years 1998 until 2008, they were the tallest buildings in the entire world.  The construction of these buildings began in 1993 and it took seven years before these beauties were complete.  Pouring the concrete for this project lasted fifty-four hours in all.  There are eighty-eight floors with a glass bridge that connects the two buildings together.

2. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This cathedral can be found within Red Square in Moscow and it is officially known as either the Pokrovsky Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Protection of Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat.  Ivan the Terrible had this cathedral constructed between 1555 and 1561 and it now contains ten churches.  The entire building is shaped like a bonfire’s flame and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.

3. Burj Khalifa

This is also known as the Burj Dubai, since it is in Dubai, and it is currently the largest structure in the world, measuring in at just under eight hundred and thirty meters.  The construction began in 2004, and while it was completed in 2009, it didn’t officially open to the public until 2010.

4. The Colosseum

Almost everybody knows about the Colosseum, which can be found in the city of Rome in Italy.  More than fifty thousand spectators could sit and watch performances and other events in this amphitheater once construction was completed in 80A.D.  While the Colosseum is starting to show some deterioration, Italy has done a great job of preserving this historical site for future generations.

5. Buckingham Palace

This palace began as a townhouse that was constructed back in 1705.  During the 19^th century, work began to expand the home into the palace that is seen today with the addition of three different wings.  Once the work was completed, the name changed from Buckingham House to Buckingham Palace and it is where the British monarchy has lived since 1837.

6. The Sydney Opera House

There are so many beautiful buildings in Sydney, Australia and many of them have modern architectural styles.  The Sydney Opera House can be found in the middle of the city and it was opened to the public back in 1973.  There are now more than fifteen hundred performances held inside the Sydney Opera House every year and more than seven million people go there to experience it firsthand for themselves either by attending a performance or taking a tour.  Those who take a tour are astonished when they see the size of the inside, as it is one hundred and eighty-three meters in length and one hundred and twenty meters in width.

7. The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal can be found in Agra, which is in the country of India, and it is considered the most beautiful mausoleum in the entire world.  Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had this mausoleum constructed in honor of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.  The architectural styles of this buildings are comprised of Indian, Islamic, Ottoman Turkish, and Persian.  The mausoleum was constructed of white marble and the tomb within the mausoleum is the focal point of the entire complex of buildings that surround it.

8. The Shard

The Shard can be found in the middle of the city of London, although people can capture a glimpse of it for miles.  The building is shaped like a pyramid, and at eighty-seven stories, it is one of the tallest buildings in Europe.  While the construction crew used many different materials, it is the eleven thousand glass panels that captures the attention of people the most.

9. The Leaning Tower of Pisa

No one thought that the Leaning Tower of Pisa would stay standing for as long as it has, since it was leaning long before the construction of the tower was completed.  It took quite a bit of time to complete this tower, and basically from the start, it has leaned four degrees towards the earth.  For some time, everyone thought that this tower would collapse onto anyone that happened to be near it, but a restoration effort has practically guaranteed that it is safe once again.  That means that although it is still leaning, no one needs to worry about it coming down any time soon.

10. One World Trade Center

This massive building in New York City has been constructed where tragedy took place back on September 11^th of 2001.  When the twin towers fell, the world was shocked at those who could create such devastation.  However, the United States and New York City proved how strong everyone was by creating and building this tower that rises one thousand seven hundred and seventy-six feet into the air.  There are one hundred and four floors in the building and while many people work inside, others arrive daily to pay their respects to those who lost their lives on that fateful day.
